Residents complain leak thirty thousand liters of concentrated uranium in Caetité

Caetité (Bahia), is a rich region in natural uranium and where is INB (Industrias Nuclear Industry of Brazil), a uranium mine where its originated raw materials to fuel the plants Angra dos Reis (RJ).
Of the 50 wells surrounding the INB, 9 were closed because of the content up to 47 times the limit set by the The Ministry of  Health awards are the Institute of  Water Management and Climate (INGA).
Odair Gonçalves, president of the National Commission of Nuclear Energy, says that the data analysis of the wells are technically wrong because the samples came from waters without identifying the source IPEN (Institute for Energy and Nuclear Research).
In 2004, a document INB admits the presence of uranium in water but claims that may be harmless and natural occurrence of metal and not a result of mining activity. The Greenpeace said, in a 2008 document, about the contamination of raw water in the region of Caetité. In October 2009, IBAMA (Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources) fined INB for radioactive leak from $ 1 million.
The mine production is 400 tons of uranium concentrate (yellow cake).
INB, whose president is Alfredo Tranjan, contracted a study to assess the impacts of mining on the health of the population of Caetité, but it will take five years to complete. In Caetité, one every three dies of  “unknown illness”.
The INGÁ reports that only in the second half of 2010 will be possible to confirm the origin of uranium found in the water. In case of leakage, the activity of the mine may be suspended.
The lack of rain, the pits closed and insufficient cars kites were the reasons  for two weeks without water last January. The village of Barreiro was also affected.
INB, which has a demand of 30m cubic, has had difficulty in operation due to lack of water in April 2009.
A mission from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), coordinated by Australian Peter Waggitt, to inspect the mine INB, seen after 10 days, recommends the monitoring of future impacts on water, but the final report will only be released in 10 months.
The production forecast for 2010 INB is 800 tons per year of YC (uranium concentrate) and for 2013, after operation of the Stª Quitéria mine, in Ceará, is 1,200 tons.
The Brazilian Nuclear Program plans to build four new plants by 2030.
